The Preserve at Woodland Hills

The Preserve at Woodland Hills is a senior living community in Los Angeles that offers assisted living and memory care services. The community features modern, spacious apartments and a variety of amenities like gardens, activity rooms, a movie theater, salon, and outdoor spaces designed to make residents feel comfortable and engaged. The community emphasizes providing personalized care through programs inspired by Montessori methods, called the Spark® program, which encourages residents to stay active, socially connected, and see themselves as useful and productive.

Many families are happy with the community, praising the caring and friendly staff, beautiful facilities, and the focus on residents' happiness. They appreciate the active lifestyle, holiday celebrations, and activities like art therapy, gardening, and music programs. Several reviews mention that staff members are attentive and motivated, with some families saying management has improved under new leadership, creating a positive environment.

However, not all experiences have been perfect. Some reviews report problems like neglect, poor hygiene, and unappetizing food, especially earlier before management changed. One reviewer was upset with the lack of attention to her mother’s needs, citing issues like neglect and weight loss, and feeling that the facility did not meet educational or therapeutic expectations for those with dementia.

In summary, The Preserve at Woodland Hills is a community that offers a lively, inclusive environment with many activities and a focus on personalized care. Families generally feel confident about the quality of care, but some have concerns about neglect and food quality, which highlights the importance of visiting and assessing the community firsthand before making a decision.

I had moved my dad into memory care at a different facility that was terrible despite its fancy digs and hefty price tag. I worked with a local placement company (shout out to Total Senior- they were amazing!) that recommended The Preserve. They assured me that new management had really turned things around and that this was a great option for my father with dementia. After touring and observing, I decided to move him in. It was the best decision! The improvement he made after coming here was huge. He went from being withdrawn and using a wheelchair to engaged and walking around again. That is not an exaggeration. It’s a testament to what good care and community can do. The key here is really the compassionate caregivers and management that is responsive and holds both staff and themselves accountable. You can see from the interactions with the residents that the caregivers take the time to get to know them and genuinely care about their wellbeing. I have a camera in my dad’s room, and the nurse even asked me to send him a clip that he could review with his team for training purposes. I appreciate that level proactivity. Is it the picture of perfection? No. I don’t know that any place can be. Sometimes there’s a random piece of laundry that goes missing or shows up in my dad’s closet. Sometimes meal service is a little slow. But any issues that have come up get a swift and thorough response from the team there. And honestly, those little things really mean nothing to me compared with the peace of mind that comes with knowing my dad is safe, clean, happy, and healthy. The property is lovely and the residents can move about freely inside and outside in the nice courtyard. The residents have the chance to socialize and spend time with each other in different settings, which I think is also really good for everyone. The meals there are varied and really good. Not really good for assisted living. Really good period. There is a community of family members here, too. It’s nice to have their active involvement and to see families look out for each other’s loved ones. I feel very lucky to have found The Preserve, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone trying to find care.

We visited The Preserve yesterday and met Justin. The community is clean, beautiful, and in a very safe neighborhood — a place I’d feel good about for any senior. Justin really cares about helping seniors. He even helped a senior who couldn’t afford The Preserve by connecting him to us so we could find another safe option. That says a lot about his heart and the kind of person he is. We’ve now started a partnership with The Preserve, and I’m excited to work with them to help more seniors. Thank you, Justin, for everything you do!

We are senior downsizing and relocation experts and this is a great community in Woodland Hills/Canoga Park area. Their assisted living and memory care are intertwined, so there is a very free flowing feeling about the community. The studio apartments are quite spacious and the caregivers are wonderful. Susan the executive director loves what she does and it shows!

While no facility is the same as 'home', the Preserve comes as close as you can get. The building and facilities are well kept (the courtyard is special); the staff is caring; the administration is attentive; the activities are plentiful and fun; the food is fresh. We are grateful that our family member is happy here! We do visit daily and at all different times - this has been a positive experience in a most difficult time of life. Thanks to Total Senior for helping us find The Preserve.

The Preserve was my last stop on a long day of touring facilities in extreme valley heat. I was looking for a place for my father who is on the younger side of dementia's unfortunate victims. He needed to move within a week and was fairly active. Happiness of Residents: When I first toured The Preserve the thing that stood out to me most was the happiness of the residents. When I walked into The Preserve the residents were all out of their rooms and actively involved in activities or conversations in the common areas. The Preserve credits their Montessori based method for this. I think their methods are amazing and super helpful, but I think there are other factors too, which I will explain below. Nicest staff, great care and fantastic food: My dad tells me daily that everyone there, staff and residents alike, is super nice. This is after five years of him living in my home telling me how he hated everyone (in our home, at the store, everywhere). This tells me two things (1) they are super nice, and (2) they know how to handle and treat memory care residents. The staff is very on top of the care of the residents. They help my dad logon to video appointments, make sure he has what he needs and help him keep his room clean and himself groomed. Their chef has an occult following. I am told that he is the greatest cook ever and every person you talk to on staff or residents will tell you his food is awesome. Seriously. Where have you seen this in assisted living before? Bedrooms not Apartments: I believe that their bedroom (not apartments) setup helps lure residents out to mingle with others. Residents socialize in the common areas, use the courtyard, and participate in activities. The rooms feel like home bedrooms and have space for a nice armchair or couch, but prevent people from just closing themselves off as often. A different kind of "Locked Down" Facility: While The Preserve has both assisted living and memory care, the memory care residents are not locked down separately. Instead, the entire facility is locked down and those who can come and go are granted exit with a knock or by staff. This type of lock down is far more comfortable (IMO), and builds a larger sense of community. This was a huge selling point for me as my dad wants to be out talking to people and can have conversations where you have no idea he has dementia. Receptive to Feedback: Susan is an amazing ED, Tony is a spectacular nurse (yes, a male nurse is a HUGE selling point), and everyone I have ever talked to has been receptive to feedback. I can't say enough wonderful things about The Preserve. They are wonderful, have been great to work with and have been so flexible and accommodating.
