Astoria Park Senior Living

My parents are still new residents here at Astoria but so far everything and everyone has been great! My parents are happy, especially with the food, as the kitchen is very accommodating to their dietary preferences and they say it tastes great. All the workers are very kind and patient with the residents. And the rooms are quite comfortable and feel like home than some sort of institution.

CAUTION ⚠️ This place is horrible! It starts from management to the kitchen to their resident care !. Caregivers abuse their residents with no discipline! They abuse them mentally and physically I’ve seen it all! They don’t know how to nurture their residents. It starts in memory care and assisted living. Their residents pendents are going off for 30 minutes plus while their diaper is soiled. The medication team is horrible.. residents are not getting their medication daily and have to remind the medication team for their meds. Management is very rude, Maria is very unprofessional and tries to provoke the residents with intimidation. Also she is very hateful towards her caregivers ( especially the ones that do their job ). She doesn’t know what is going on with the residents, she’s never introduced herself to some of the residents living there since she started. Which is very unprofessional because she is running the facility. Memory care is also very unorganized and unsafe for people with dementia. A family member should never be yelled at, scolded, pulled, yanked and forced to be in bed. They should be allowed to have freedom this is their living space and supposed to be a safe space for someone dealing with dementia. I recently went to visit in memory care and I heard that a resident had to get stitches because a caregiver pulled her by her hand, tearing her skin open… the caregiver still works there… this place doesn’t care about nobody’s safety, especially for someone dealing with dementia. Housekeeping is also very unprofessional.. they talk upon themselves and gossip all day, the restrooms are very dirty with urine all over the floor. I’ve seen multiple times caregivers having to do housekeepings job because they don’t like doing it themselves. Maintenance team is also a whole other issue. They prolong issues that need a quick solution. From leaks to doors falling to shower handles not working. When the issues are brought up to maintenance expect to be waiting more then a week for anything to get fixed or looked at.

My uncle is a current resident at Astoria. From the moment you step onto the campus of Astoria Park Senior Living, you sense the care and thoughtfulness embedded in every corner. Nestled just minutes away from Old Town Pasadena and its lively atmosphere, this community beautifully blends elegance, comfort, and accessibility—making it an ideal haven for seniors seeking peace and engagement alike. The facility's atmosphere radiates cleanliness, warmth, and professionalism. Residents and their families consistently praise the friendly, dedicated staff and the strong sense of “home” Memory Care at Astoria Park shines with its person-centered, holistic approach. From nutritious meals and 24/7 engagement to secure, comforting environments, every detail is designed for dignity, connection, and well-being. Services include personalized assistance with daily routines, social activities, private dining, and safe outdoor areas. Seems like the new Memory Care Director has really done some remarkable work.

Everyone is very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. But the air freshener used is too overwhelming and strong. I would hate to smell it all day and everyday, which is what most residents have to do. Please change it out.

If you're considering Astoria for your loved one, here's the quick scoop! Don't just go by the high ratings and first impressions - do your own research and due diligence before committing to placement. I gave this place a 3-star rating because, honestly, it's not perfect but it's not the worst either. Starting with the positive, most of the staff are super friendly and doing their best. (If it wasn't for the staff, I probably would've given this place a 2 star rating) However, it's obvious that they are extremely understaffed and overburdened. There is a high turnover rate among care staff and management, it seems like they are constantly training new staff. Within just eight months of my mom's residency, both the Regional Executive Director and the Medical Director left, and there have not been any replacements yet. They also still do not have a transport shuttle driver, a service that is crucial for residents with mobility challenges to get to their appointments. The cleaning crew does very basic maintenance like emptying out the trash, so I have to do a deep cleaning of the room once a month. If your loved one requires incontinence care, be prepared for them to wait upwards of 30 minutes to an hour for assistance. Overall, Astoria provides an adequate level of care, but it's clear that there are a lot of issues with management. They seem to pride themselves on being the best of the best, but in reality, they are just providing the bare minimum. Hope this helps anyone navigating this tough decision.
