We had to transition my Mother in Law into the memory care community at Brookdale Collin Oaks and the staff has made this very hard time much easier on our family. The nurses and front office staff have been amazing and have cared for my mother in law like they would their own family. They have gone above and beyond to make sure she is comfortable and well taken care of. The staff is very professional and the community is very clean and well maintained. I highly recommend this community.
My Mom has lived at Brookdale-Collin Oaks for a year. It has been a very good experience. She is well cared for, the staff are friendly and seem to genuinely care about the residents. My Mom has slight dementia, is hearing impaired and has a speech impairment, yet everyone is very patient with her. They take time to greet her, speak loudly in her ear so she can hear and understand, etc... Of particular mention is the activities director, Lola and the concierge, Pam. They both look after Mom and makes sure she is involved and Mom seems to have a special connection with each of them. At her previous residence,Mom was unwilling to leave the facility on excursions. However, at Brookdale-Collin Oaks, the staff there has earned my Mom's trust, and now she leaves the facility often for activities and looks forward to the next outings. Great job!
Let's start with the pros: 1. The individuals are kind 2. The facility appears clean 3. The food is good TLDR: Pricing will vary significantly, medicine that needs to be adjusted periodically won't be done timely, charges from doctor, but no signs the doctor is actually doing anything. The issues: Failed to give tests that cause problem with my fathers medication. This cause a large discoloration on his body. We were told it's because he fell. He said he didn't fall and it didn't look anything like a fall issue and looked much more like an issue with his medication. Once they finally get back on performing the tests and adjusting his medicine the mark went away. Father took tylenol for pain. They took his tylenol away so that they can be in control of his medicine. But they don't promptly give him medicine. He called several time in pain saying he can't sleep due to the pain. The staff say they need to get an order to give him tylenol, I figured they would do that after taking it away his medicine. I have to come in-person to get them to get that order put in. I dropped by the next weekend to ask about it and was told it wasn't put in and that they would put it in. So takes a couple weeks and a face to face meeting to get him tylenol. He's had a problem with sores and infection on his legs for probably 7 months. We talked to the staff about it didn't do anything about it we asked that a doctors appointment be made, nothing came of that. We had a 3rd party home health service that took it on themselves to really call and get something done and maybe two months in it got a little better. Still continued problems though that lead to two visits to the emergency room. Which seemed to be the first real items that brought progress. Back to the facility and everything gets worse. Then the billing we were charged as expected the first few months, then the bill was about $2,500 more than expected. We thought maybe it was a fluke, next month was about $800 more, than it was $1,500 more. So we send an email asking about billing and get no response finally we put in our notice because enough was enough. We finally get a response back after a month had passed by when they get the notice. They said they would look into it. A couple weeks later with regularly asking for an updates and they say nothing is wrong, the personal services can just make the bill unpredictable. Offerred a discount in the future. A couple weeks go by constantly asking if the discount will be approved and reflected on the bill. Ultimately gave them a deadline and the time came and went. If you are on a budget or your loved ones medical isn't well controlled I would consider other facilities.
Just wanted to share my experience with Brookdale and a particular staff member named Deborah. Our dad has dementia and he has been a resident here for 8 months. Everytime I visit Deborah takes extra time to talk with us,and answer all of our questions. She is incredibly caring and is always engaging with the residents. Her compassion goes way beyond anything we could've hoped for! It's not easy when the decision has to be made for your loved one, but I have no doubt that Brookdale is where he belongs. Thanks to Deborah and staff it has been a pleasant experience.
As the Executive Director of the facility, Laura Evitts sets the tone at Brookdale by being available, responsive, friendly, and helpful! She and the rest of the staff have gone above and beyond to help our family and my mom so she is happy and comfortable. It is impossible for everything to be perfect all the time but any issues that have come up have been addressed quickly. My mom is happy to be at Brookdale Collin Oaks and I really feel like they are happy to have her there.
